Primary – Curriculum
Our curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and the Bishop's Directory. It is coherently planned and sequenced to be ambitious for all pupil groups and ensures breadth, depth and balance. Catholic values and Catholic Social Teaching principles underpin everything we do.
The aim of our curriculum is to instill a love of learning in our pupils, enabling them to gain the requisite skills to be successful, independent and motivated learners, in readiness for their next stage of education and beyond.
At St Michael’s all teachers plan collaboratively as year groups. This ensures consistency of teaching and equal opportunities for all pupils. Connections are made between subjects to make learning more meaningful and interesting. In their planning teachers consider the differing needs of the children, offering them an appropriate level of challenge. Each member of staff has responsibility for a particular area of the curriculum.
In Reception, our teachers follow the early years foundation stage (EYFS), providing purposeful play and exploratory activity both indoors and outdoors.
The areas of learning and development that we focus on in EYFS are:
-
Communication and language (C&L)
-
Physical development (PD)
-
Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)
-
Literacy
-
Mathematics
-
Understanding the world (UTW)
-
Expressive arts and design (EAD)
In years 1-6, our teachers follow the national curriculum, alongside other experiences and opportunities, which provides our children with all the knowledge and skills that they need in order to excel throughout their learning journeys and beyond.
